The 287(g) program is an agreement between local law enforcement agencies and Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) that gives local law enforcement the authority to enforce immigration law. Six counties (Alamance, Cabarrus, Gaston, Henderson, Mecklenburg, and Wake) and one city (Durham) in North Carolina are in partnership with ICE through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). There are many reasons for which the 287 (g) program must be terminated: 1) the majority of people are deported for misdemeanor infractions 2) there is high risk of racial profiling towards minorities 3) lack of transparency in the process 4) immigrants are fearful of reporting crimes making our communities less safe.
