Comunidad Sana Program

El Pueblo is continuing our successful Comunidad Sana: Latino Breast Cancer Education Program, which has been funded by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure since 2002. This project targets new immigrant Latinas living in the expanded Triangle area through culturally and linguistically-appropriate comprehensive efforts raising breast cancer awareness, highlighting the importance of early detection and helping Latinas diagnosed with breast cancer navigate the health care system.

These comprehensive efforts include education and outreach, focused media campaigns, and referrals to link and support Latinas in accessing existing breast-health related services in their region. Comunidad Sana also provides technical assistance to health and human service providers interested in learning about how to better reach and serve Latinas. Comunidad Sana has secured funding from GlaxoSmithKline to provide gas cards to pay for transportation for Latinas from Wake County Human Services' Fe, Amor y Esperanza. Fe, Amor y Esperanza is a support group for Latinas diagnosed with breast cancer and El Pueblo, Inc. actively refers Latinas to this group, which meets the second Saturday of every month at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, 1801 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27605 (on the corner of Cox and Hillsborough Street). This is a group that not only provides opportunity for Latina survivors to make friends and to receive emotional support but also to find answers to their questions and to learn about breast cancer related resources.
