El Pueblo No Fumo Youth Leadership Program
In this issue we focus on El Pueblo's"No Fumo" Youth Leadership Program:
Join No Fumo Youth Leaders for National Kick Butts Day Activities March 23 - April 2nd
Beginning March 23rd, North Carolina's Latino teens will join thousands of youth in every state and around the world in speaking out on national "Kick Butts Day" to discourage their peers and others from tobacco use.
Tobacco kills more than 400,000 people in the U.S. every year, and over 12,000 in North Carolina alone. An estimated 416,000 NC youth are exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes, putting them at higher risk for a number of adverse health effects such as ear and eye infections, asthma, bronchitis, and even SIDS.

Raleigh Parks Go Smoke Free
| |

The Raleigh City Council voted 6-2 on February 1 to ban smoking in all city parks except for Nash and Moore squares in downtown. TRU youth have been working toward 100% tobacco free policies in Raleigh parks for several years because:
Tobacco free recreational opportunities are family friendly and environmentally friendly.
Children and youth model adult behavior, and tobacco free parks reinforce healthy lifestyle messages.
Small children playing in parks and on recreation grounds are more likely to ingest cigarette butts if they are discarded and accessible.
El Pueblo's teen tobacco prevention activities are funded by a grant from the NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund (HWTF). TRU (Tobacco.Reality.Unfiltered) is HWTF's teen tobacco prevention campaign, for more information visit: www.realityunfiltered.com.
